Minimize downtime, maximize output
The thermal imaging service that keeps your operations flowing
At Alfa Laval we understand that unexpected and unplanned downtime can have major impacts on your efficiency and profitability.
That’s why we offer our industry-leading Visual Condition Assessment (VCA), using thermal imaging technology to monitor the condition of your gasketed plate heat exchangers and identify potential issues before they lead to costly disruptions.
Leveraging our extensive expertise, we perform a comprehensive mechanical integrity assessment—verifying plate installation, checking dimensions, and identifying external concerns.
In addition, we use a thermal camera to assess thermal performance, enabling us to proactively detect and flag emerging problems.

VCA brings cheer to whisky-maker
Chivas Brothers, one of the leading Scotch whisky-makers, rely on Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers to produce their finest single malt and blended whiskies across 12 distilleries in Scotland, and they quickly recognized the advantages of the VCA service.
With global demand for their whisky on the rise, Chivas Brothers prioritize efficient production and minimal unplanned downtime. The traditional summer ‘silent season’—a brief production halt for essential maintenance—can last as little as 10 days.
By using Alfa Laval’s VCA service on a two-year rolling schedule, they ensure that heat exchanger audits are performed with maximum effectiveness.
What is VCA?
A VCA (Visual Condition Assessment) from Alfa Laval involves a comprehensive inspection of heat exchangers, combining both visual and thermal analysis.
An Alfa Laval service engineer begins by visually examining the heat exchangers to identify signs of corrosion, leaks, fouling, incorrect installations, and other potential issues. These observations are then complemented by a thermal imaging camera connected to a smart device, allowing for a deeper, data-driven assessment.
For Chivas Brothers, this approach eliminates the need for their technicians to disassemble and reassemble the units, an often-time-consuming process that can introduce delays and complications. More than just a thermal inspection, the VCA leverages Alfa Laval’s in-depth knowledge of the customer’s installed base to deliver targeted insights and proactive maintenance recommendations.
Reporting back
The customer gets a report that includes:
- Unit data, including any changes and adaptations
- Pictures and description of problem areas
- Thermal image of unit, with an interpretation
- Summary of findings and recommendations for straightforward maintenance
